Research Network for Transcultural Practices in the Arts and Humanities

Birgit Hopfener ist derzeit Vertretungsprofessorin für Neuere und Neueste Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Duisburg-Essen. Am Lehrstuhl für für Globale Kunstgeschichte im Exzellenzcluster „Asien und Europa im globalen Kontext“ der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg verfolgt sie ihr Habilitationsprojekt „Disjunctive Contemporaneity. Artistic Cartographies of Transcultural and Art-historical Self-positioning” Das Projekt analysiert wie sich zeitgenössische Kunst im Kontext der heutigen –  räumlich und  zeitlich disjunktiven globalen – Welt durch multiple und verflochtene Geschichten und Wissensstrukturen konstituiert auf welche Weise diese heterogene Verfassung zeitgenössischer Kunst die Disziplin Kunstgeschichte, die konventionell durch die westliche Moderne und das hierarchische Modell einer linearen und binären Geschichtsschreibung konstitutiert ist, herausfordert. Sie ist Autorin der Publikation “Installationskunst in China. Transkulturelle Verhandlungsräume einer Genealogie des Performativen” (transcript 2014) sowie Mitherausgeberin der Sammelbänd „Negotiating Difference. Contemporary Chinese Art in the Global Context“ (VDG Weimar 2012) und „Situating Global Art. Topologies – Temporalities – Trajectories“ (transcript 2017, erscheint in Kürze). Sie ist gehört dem editorial board der Zeitschriften ASAPJournal (Johns Hopkins University  Press) und Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art (Intellect Ltd, UK) an und ist Mitbegründerin des „Research Network for Transcultural Practices in the Arts and Humanities“ (RNTP).  Im August übernimmt sie an der Carleton Universität in Ottawa, Kanada den Confucius Chair für chinesische Kunstgeschichte.  

Birgit Hopfener is currently visiting professor for contemporary art history (Vertretungsprofessorin für Neuere und Neueste Kunstgeschichte) an der Universität Duisburg-Essen. At the Chair of Global Art history at the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg she pursues her habilitation project “Disjunctive Contemporaneity. Artistic Narrative Cartographies of Transcultural and Art-historical Self-positioning”. The project seeks to reveal how contemporary art in the context of today’s spatially as well as temporally disjunctive global world is constituted through multiple and entangled histories and epistemologies of art and discusses how this new complexity of art in consequence demands a radical rethinking of art historical frameworks and methodologies.  She is the author of “Installationskunst in China. Transkulturelle Verhandlungsräume einer Genealogie des Performativen” (transcript 2014) and co-editor of the anthologies “Negotiating Difference. Contemporary Chinese Art in the Global Context“ (VDG Weimar 2012) and „Situating Global Art. Topologies – Temporalities – Trajectories“ (transcript 2017, in print). She serves on the editorial boards of the journals Zeitschriften ASAPJournal (Johns Hopkins University  Press) und Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art (Intellect Ltd, UK) and is co-founder of the „Research Network for Transcultural Practices in the Arts and Humanities“ (RNTP). She recently has been appointed Confucius Chair of Chinese Art History at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
